Course Goal

To further develop the student’s attitude, knowledge, and skills, essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, responsible, and ethical use of a concealed handgun for personal defense.

Course Description

Michigan Firearms’ Personal Defense Level Two Course develops the student’s attitude, knowledge, and skills involved in safely, responsibly, and effectively employing a concealed handgun for personal defense. This is an intensive course, it is extremely important that the student know, understand, and has practiced the defense shooting skills learned in Personal Defense Level One, before entering this course; as the student must learn and practice many diverse shooting skills to respond quickly and appropriately to the broad range of threats that he or she may encounter. Similarly, the student must also learn and understand the unique safety and legal issues that apply when a concealed handgun is carried in public. This course reviews the legal ramifications of concealed carry, including who can legally carry a handgun, when concealed carry is and is not permitted, the legal and ethical ramifications when responding to a life-threatening encounter using a concealed handgun, and the legal, moral, emotional, and social aftermath of the use of deadly force.

As a result of this training, the student should be able to explain or do the following with regard to carrying and using a handgun for personal defense:

  • Explain importance of carrying and using a handgun responsibly and ethically
  • Explain how the three fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling apply
  • Explain how the NRA rules for using and storing a gun apply when carrying concealed pistols
  • Special safety considerations that must be observed when carrying or using a concealed handgun for personal defense
  • The various techniques for storing a handgun
  • The four levels of awareness and how they apply to concealed carry
  • The importance of mental preparation and developing the proper mindset for carrying and using a handgun for personal defense and facing a life-threatening encounter
  • Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations
  • The psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack
  • Techniques for responding and controlling a violent encounter
  • The emotional, legal, and social aftermath of a defensive shooting
  • Explain the general rights and restrictions under laws permitting the carrying of concealed handguns for personal defense
  • State key legal provisions and restrictions pertaining to the use of deadly force
  • Potential criminal and civil legal actions that may be taken subsequent a violent encounter
  • Identify various concealed carry modes – benefits and limitations of each
  • Explain the basic principles of handgun concealment
  • Demonstrate safely presenting and re-holstering a concealed handgun
  • Present a concealed handgun and shoot targets in the center of exposed mass in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner
  • Conduct speed reloading, clear stoppages, and shoot center of mass
  • Identify organizations, associations, clubs, and businesses that may help hone, enhance, and expand personal defense skills
  • Explain methods and precautions for dry-fire practice, including drawing from the holster

IMPORTANT NOTES!

  • You will need to provide the handgun you plan to use for concealed carry
  • A minimum of two (2) magazines (semi-autos) or two (2) speed-loaders (revolvers) are required for this course
  • An extra magazine / speed-loader holder is suggested
  • 250 rounds of ammunition is required
  • Snap-Caps / Dummy Rounds (minimum of 5) are required
  • A concealed carry holster or a concealed carry purse with a cross-body strap is required
  • Hearing and eye protection are required on the range at all times
  • Hard-shell knee pads are recommended as an additional training device
  • This course is required to advance to Personal Defense Level Three

  • Successful Completion of Michigan Firearms Defensive Handgun Level One
  • Successful Completion of the Pre-Qualification Assessment conducted by a Michigan Firearms’ Instructor (charges to conduct assessment may apply)
